Caitlyn Yu, Software Engineer, Aspera, an IBM company – July 19, 2016

Everyone has something they’re good at, passionate about or even just interested in. For some, that may be building the next big thing – here at Aspera, an IBM company, we’re really into transporting data at high speeds. For others, that may be journaling or perhaps enjoying the great outdoors. For me, well, let’s say it’s definitely not running.

As someone who’s working towards several personal health and fitness goals this year, becoming a better runner was next on my list. I’ve always wanted to run a little faster and for a little longer. As a non-runner, I can finish a mile in a little over nine minutes (that number used to be closer to 12 way back when and has been dropping steadily). But a 4K? It currently takes me around 30 minutes to complete those 2.49 miles.

My personal goal is to be able to finish a 5K in 30 minutes or less. What are your goals this year? With less than six months left in 2016, don’t wait around for your 2017 New Year’s resolution to set out and achieve your goals!

Get out of your comfort zone, try new things and push it to the limit! I’m proud of all that I’ve achieved so far: Complete my first run? Check. Write a blog post? Phew, got that out of the way. Finish my P90X-like fitness program? Only two weeks left of that! Have you achieved any of your goals this year? It’s never too late to get the ball rolling, and it’s significantly easier with a buddy (thanks to all my workout buddies out there!)

Whatever your goals may be, what better way to get started than by participating in the 4K 4Charity Fun Run at IBC 2016? If you’re a non-runner like me, it’s a great way to get your feet wet – the course is more than a mile, but not quite a 5K (3.1 miles). What’s more is that it’s all for a good cause!

So here’s my challenge for you. All you non-runners traveling to Amsterdam for IBC in September, take the plunge and register for your first run! For the experienced runners, can you be the first to cross the finish line? Let’s all finish 2016 with charitable contributions, achieved fitness goals and a scenic run through Amstelpark together!
